Glow Up This Spring: 10 Powerful Sunscreens to Save Your Skin

It’s springtime in New Zealand! The days are getting longer, flowers are blooming, and the sun shines a little brighter every day. While it’s the perfect time to soak up some vitamin D, it’s also a reminder to make sunscreen your go-to for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays.

Did you know that New Zealand has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world? That’s because our ozone layer is thinner here, making sunscreen a must-have all year round, especially now as we head into the hotter months.

I used to be one of those people who thought, “Oh, I don’t need sunscreen unless I’m going to the beach.” Big mistake! One short picnic at Hamilton Gardens without sunscreen taught me a painful lesson. By the end of the day, my skin was red and stinging. UV rays don’t take a day off, and neither should we when it comes to sunscreen.

So, after trying a ton of sunscreens and dealing with everything from greasy finishes to white cast disasters, I’ve rounded up 10 amazing sunscreens for this spring. (Spoiler alert: half of these are K-beauty gems!)

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Air-Fit Sunscreen

This one is my absolute favourite, and it’s earned its spot at the top of the list. It’s so lightweight that you forget you’re even wearing sunscreen. I’ve got sensitive skin, and the Centella Asiatica in this formula calms everything down.

What do I love most? No white cast. Seriously, even my partner, who never goes near skincare, doesn’t mind using it. it’s super easy to reapply throughout the day and perfect for everyday wear, whether I’m going on a hike or just grabbing coffee in town. This one’s a keeper!

Beauty of Joseon Rice + Probiotics Sunscreen

If you’ve been following K-beauty trends, you’ve probably seen this one all over Instagram. And trust me, it’s worth the hype. It feels like a moisturiser and sinks into your skin so quickly. The rice extract and probiotics give this sunscreen a hydrating, glowy finish which is perfect for spring.

I love this for no-makeup days because it makes my skin look naturally healthy. And if you’ve got dry skin, this one’s a winner.

COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream

I’ve been a fan of COSRX for years, so I had to give this a try. It’s super hydrating, thanks to the aloe vera, and it has a subtle fresh scent that’s calming. I tend to use this on days when my skin feels a bit parched, like after sitting in air conditioning for hours.

One thing to note: it’s not completely matte, so if you’re super oily, you might prefer something lighter. But for me, it’s like a skincare boost and sunscreen in one.

Birch Juice Moisturising Sunscreen by ROUND LAB

This one feels fancy in the best way. It’s so light and hydrating, and the birch sap in it makes it feel like a cooling drink for your skin. On those days when my face feels tight or dry, ROUND LAB is my go-to.

It gives me that dewy look without being greasy. If you’re looking for something that makes your skin feel plump and fresh, grab this one. You’ll thank me later.

Etude House Sunrise Mild Airy Finish Sun Milk

Okay, I’ll admit I bought this because the name was cute. But it totally surprised me. It’s perfect for oily skin because it dries down to this soft, matte finish. I wear it when I know I’ll be sweating, like during a spring picnic at Hamilton Gardens.

Etude House products are really affordable, so if you’re on a budget but want something effective, this one’s for you.

SK-II Atmosphere Airy Light UV Emulsion

This is my “fancy event” sunscreen. It’s a splurge, but oh my gosh, it makes my skin glow. It’s got this smooth, silky texture that feels luxurious, and it layers beautifully under makeup.

Would I use this SK-II sunscreen every day? Probably not, because my wallet wouldn’t survive. But for special occasions? Absolutely.

SKIN AQUA UV Super Moisture Gel

SKIN AQUA technically isn’t K-beauty (it’s Japanese), but I had to include it. It’s so light, it feels like you’re applying water to your skin. I love how quickly it absorbs. Perfect for those rushed mornings when you just need to slap something on and go.

It’s also water-resistant, so it’s become my hiking buddy. No more sunburns on the trails!

Cancer Society Everyday Sunscreen

This is a classic that everyone in New Zealand should have in their bag. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s reliable and does the job. Plus, it feels good knowing you’re supporting a local cause while protecting your skin.

I usually use the Cancer Society Sunscreen on my arms and legs because it’s a bit thicker than I like for my face. But hey, it’s affordable and gets the job done!

Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face Superscreen

If you want your sunscreen to feel like skincare, Mecca Cosmetica is for you. It’s got antioxidants, so it feels like you’re giving your skin some extra love while protecting it. And the glowy finish? Chef’s kiss.

It’s a bit of a splurge, but the compliments on your skin make it worth it.

Coola Organic Sunscreen Spray

Coola is for all my eco-conscious readers. It’s reef-safe, organic, and smells like a tropical holiday. I love the spray format for touch-ups throughout the day. It’s so convenient when you’re out and about.

I’ll admit it’s a bit pricier, but the feel-good factor makes it a treat worth indulging in every now and then.

Sunscreen Tips You’ll Actually Use

A person applying sunscreen outdoors on a sunny day

  • Make It a Habit: Keep your sunscreen next to your toothbrush. If you’re brushing your teeth, you might as well slather some SPF on too.
  • Reapply, Reapply, Reapply: Sunscreen wears off after about two hours. Keep a small bottle in your bag for easy touch-ups.
  • Don’t Skip Key Spots: Ears, neck, and hands need love too. Those areas age just as quickly!
  • Mix and Match: Use lighter formulas for your face and heavier ones for your body.

Sunscreen isn’t just about avoiding sunburn—it’s about protecting your skin in the long term. Studies show that using SPF daily can reduce your risk of melanoma by 50%. And who doesn’t want healthy, glowing skin?

So, what’s your go-to sunscreen? Are you a K-beauty fan, or do you stick with local favourites? The right sunscreen can make all the difference.

Here’s to a sunny, glowing, and SPF-filled spring!
