Nausea is the worst. No really it sucks. I don’t need to describe it to you for you to know. If you’ve had nausea before, the sheer memory of it can make you, well, nauseous. But you know what’s the worst ting about it? How long it takes to cure. You can probably remember being nauseous for days, with time melting away in your sweats, fever and loss of appetite.
But there is a way to cure nauseous, whether it’s from morning sickness, food poisoning, motion sickness or even dehydration. Keep in mind the treatment chosen should depend on where your nauseous comes from – particularly if you’re pregnant! And the best part is that cure doesn’t need a prescription (read: expensive doctors appointment).
1. Ginger
Ahh glorious ginger. When you think of ginger, you probably think of ginger tea when you have a cold or those awful ginger chocolates old people seem to love. But guess what? Ginger has a little known health benefit – stopping nausea dead in its tracks. Every Day Roots explains how ginger does this:
Ginger promotes the secretion of various digestive juices/enzymes that help neutralize stomach acid. It also contains phenols that relax stomach muscles and act similar to a sedative on irritated stomach tissue, reducing over activity of the stomach. At the same time, the phenols are helping your intestine move digested food and toxins through your system quicker, getting any bad stuff that may be making you feel ill pass faster.
Sounds good right! And what’s great is you don’t need to try incorporate ginger into a new recipe. A nice ginger honey tea, like the ones you drink when you have a cold, will work wonders. It tastes great, and is way, way healthier than most other “health drinks!
Time taken: Three minutes or however long it takes you to brew a cuppa tea!
2. Adapt the BRAT Diet
No not that kind of brat. BRAT is an acronym for Bananas Rice Applesauce and Toast. These foods are known for being easy to stomach. Alongside curing your nausea, they shorten the duration of your symptoms and prevent reactions from bad food choices. Score!
However keep in mind that this diet shouldn’t be adapted longterm. It’s pretty restrictive and won’t give you the nutrients you need. I know it can be scary to go back to a normal diet after feeling nauseous. But please only keep this diet for 24 – 48 hours.
Time taken: A minute to peel a banana, two to microwave precooked rice, 4 seconds to open a jar of applesauce or three minutes to cook some toast.
3. Non-prescription medication
I’m all for natural cures. But at the end of the day, pills aren’t all bad. In fact, sometimes you do need medicine because things won’t go away on their own. Doctors and researchers are incredibly intelligent; teams of highly trained experts have developed pills over several years. Have you ever considered that they know more about your illness than that indie “health nut”” blogger who claims pills are of the devil?
There are lots of great pills out there that don’t require an expensive doctors appointment. Just visit your local pharmacy and ask for any of these bad boys:
- Emetrol (relaxes stomach muscles)
- Pepto-Bismol (coats stomach lining)
- Kaopectate (great for gastritis)
Keep in mind that if your nausea comes from morning sickness, you should stay away from this medication. Sorry about that.
